The artist collective Chim↑Pom from Smappa!Group's project "KANE-ZANMAI" will revive for one night only the legendary shiitake mushroom soba that was once located in Namikibashi, Shibuya! Other artists include Technowolf's first live performance in three years, curation by new art performance platform Ham Tamago Sandwich, and many others, including Kusamu Madlat and Makoto Aida, who traverse art and music. It is sure to be a night of chaos.

Is the opposite of artificial the opposite of natural?

In a natural environment, creatures kill creatures for predation.

I spend my daily life in the so-called city.

Deer bones from the sea of trees on Mt. Fuji were sold on a major mail-order website for pet food. And while I'm at it, I went to "stuffed dogs.

I also add to my basket the products that came up at the top of the search.

As the video switched from daily life to the Sea of Trees, I handed the deer bone to myself and the people around me.

There was a dog excitedly chewing on the bone, a whip-smart dog in clothes, and a rather round dog with a design I had seen before. Where am I?

I just want to observe those dogs in the sea of trees.

The performance was half improvised within a few tools and a prearranged format. The performance began with a story about how he had not eaten or drank anything since his medical checkup the day before until the day of the performance. As he spoke, he started bowling with a bone gum (a dog treat made by soaking cow skin in milk and drying it) as the "ball" and a spudding as the "pin" and began a binding game in which he could drink if he knocked it over. Starving, I secretly eat a loaf of bread and some chili peppers mixed in it, so that no one will know I'm behind it. Before long, I became like a dog, and the training shifted to throwing a piece of bone gum in my mouth.

The format of the performance was intended to be based on mutual surveillance and unbalanced information sharing.

The audience was divided into left and right seats, and the performance appeared to be about different things at the same time. Because the seats were facing each other, the audience saw each other through the performers, so that if one audience member laughed, the other did not know why the other was laughing. The stress of not being able to see creates frustration in the audience and accentuates the audience's own constraints. Only when the viewer stands up from his or her seat to look at the work can he or she understand the entire content of the work. In response to this frontless event, do the viewers adopt the black box viewing rules? Or do they adopt white cube viewing rules?

Chibigutsu | Spectacular Bath Festival♨️OkuYu~🎋 Collaboration Performance

Saturday, July 9 and Sunday, July 10, 2022　

A two-day fun, chaotic, artistic and participatory festival bathhouse event by Chibiguts!

Oku Yu~Land (Arakawa-ku｜Kumanomae station) 5-27-5 Higashi-Oku, Arakawa-ku (closed)

Flea market, accessory and clothing stores, etc. in the rest area on the first floor.

Zine sales workshop, public bathhouse photo studio, Shibainu café, and artworks will be exhibited in the bathrooms on the 1st floor. 3F Chibigutsu! will be used as a performance venue for dance, contemporary music, theater, and art exhibits. Live and performance sessions will be improvised by those who are present. Chibigatsu Ondo will also be performed!

We had a one-hour dance performance with laughter, this time in improvisational collaboration with guests performers.

Spectacular Bath Festival Day!!!

The theme for this event was 音 沙 汰 (otosata), a Japanese word  meaning “news (from someone), "contact” . The first character  of the word, 音 (oto), meaning sound. Together, the last two  characters, 沙 (sand) and 汰 (washing/sieving) carry the meaning of  “tidings” , “verdict” , “instructions” , “notice” ; something precious  like the gold found when sieving sand. We invited artists who  use sound to convey their tidings to perform. At the end, we invited them to join us in discussing the performances.

He's like that, too. Someone called him "performance monkey."

Is this liquid like water, I always feel like I'm drowning

Is it words like water, or is it everyday life like words

Oh no, oh no, I really can't get my footing

This is the sound of my heart. My pulse is getting more and more erratic

The poem spoken during the actual performance was more ad-libbed. There was no water in the bathtub, but I wanted my words to project my emotions while adjusting the sound equipment, so I hastily hung the cloth I had brought and projected my face on it. I had an image of a liquid, so I made the cloth bend.

I made an algorithmic composition by referring to a genetic algorithm. This program changes the sound by influencing the external input sound. It can be seen as learning, depending on how you look at it. The human words and voice are continually bombarded with the sequences created by the program. The machine continues to operate without emotion. I would like to ask what is a human being.

The artist sought to express beauty in dissonance. The sounds produced by synthesizers are near atonal and have few specific note sequences. On the other hand, the acoustic piano made extensive use of sequential progressions based on whole-tone scales and chromatic scales. The interplay between the two instruments produces sounds without artifice, like natural phenomena. The wind and rain were used as sounds to express the dazzling changes of nature. The mixing of tones changes depending on where you listen to it, and no one is listening to the same sound, which is oriented toward the absolutely unbridgeable distance between people.

What is "Drawing Sound Performance/Drawing Line Music"?

In this performance, which defines "the act of drawing is the act of performing", the "line" derived from the drawing action always plays a "sound" and the "sound" is always established as a "line". Here, sight and hearing are linked, and they are connected to the bodily behavior (i.e., touch) of rubbing objects against each other, resulting in a borderless and comprehensive experience.

Also, unlike ordinary music, in which the sound played disappears, the "sound" here deposits time on paper, so when you look at the result of the drawing, you can relive not only the trajectory of the drawing act but also the "sound" played.

When there are many layers of sedimentation, the past is overlaid and obscured, but confronting such a picture can be compared to the experience of being confronted with ruins.

Just as the word "hearing" has been applied to the attitude of trying to sense and discern invisible, minute changes in the traditional Japan culture, eg.  "listening to incense" and "listening to sake," in this performance we aim for a new sensation of "listening to the line" like "listening to sound" and a comprehensive "hearing" that transcends these boundaries.

The clock doesn't always tell the same time. The dining room table in the dining room does. We're not idiots. Just as, answered, the telephone presents an unexpected though often recognized voice so a table should speak, provoking, if not surprising, at least a variety of responses. Eating is only one. The dining room table will not do. It is taken apart, stored, then sent to the south. Another, a loan not a possession, but having a history of many uses, is brought in. That it is round is its concern. It might have been square or rectangular. Its surface, however, stimulates the tendency to do something, in this case a process of bleaching and staining. And the chairs around it: the removal of varnish and the application of paint. The result is nothing special. It looks as though something had been tried and had been found to work: to have many uses, not focussing attention but letting attention focus itself.

Prepare a variety of everyday activities that you might carry out in your living room, corresponding to action words displayed by the program.

Attach a microphone to your hand. This will amplify the sounds of your actions and record them.

Start the program. The amount of sections will be determined at random.

Each section has an action word and a timer- both randomized. Carry out the action during the given time.

Between each section is an interlude, during which sounds from previous sections are looped and layered on each other. Use this time to transition into new activities as needed.

At the end, the layered, looped sounds of all the actions will play for a long time before gradually deteriorating. Leave the stage during this time.

Carry out all of the actions as naturally as possible.

This work is a contradiction. It is impossible, under these circumstances, to be truly natural. But the performer tries...

He's aware of the mic and what sounds it will pick up- he'd like to pick up them up cleanly and with enough volume, but doesn't want to use his hands too unnaturally. 

He wants to carry out the instructed action, but maybe he's not quite done with the previous action. So he does both simultaneously, like we multi-task in our daily lives. But the combination of actions may be strange.

At the end, he tries to leave the stage nonchalantly, but the event organizer insists he say “Thank you very much” to the audience.

Based on the motif of the striking method of a concrete inspection technician, the performance hits every corner of the venue. In the first half, sticky notes are placed in each part of the microphone where the characteristic sound can be confirmed. The venue marked in this way is likened to a multi-percussion set, and in the second half, the performance is performed as an improvisational percussion instrument.

In order for us to perceive the world, we need to compartmentalize objects through meaningful words. However, subtle differences in nature have been recognized through imitation of natural sounds. These words, called onomatopoeia, are common throughout the world. In this work, he relies on these pre-verbal senses to explore opportunities to connect existing spaces with his own senses.

This time, we were joined by two very special guests, Hikosaka Naoyoshi and Itozaki Kimiro, who attended the first session from beginning to end, making the event very rich in content.

My contribution to this piece was inspired by the book "Why Buddhism is True" by Robert Wright. Below are two passages from the book. 

[...]. Your mind is much calmer than usual, and you are viewing its contents much more objectively than usual. And some contents of your consciousness that you normally think of yourself as generating seem to be getting generated by something other than you. More than once I've heard a meditation teacher say, "Thoughts think themselves."

Mindfulness meditation [...] can let you experience your feelings-anger, love, sorrow, joy-with new sensitivity, seeing their texture, even feeling their texture, as never before.

(By "I just woke up" I don't mean getting out of bed- but starting up, a comeback! And, uh... yeah. Where did I just get back from? Or maybe I'm not back, but I'm still out? Hmm... HMMMMM??! WHICH ONE IS IT?!?!? I'M... EVERYONE-------!!!! EVERYONE--------!!

Where is the border between me and everyone?  I am... I am...  anyway, the important thing is to just be myself. This is not me having a complex and being in denial about my evil "multiple personalities". I can't become sane. I used to think I wasn't bothering anyone, but I'm done with that. I'm done. 「Resistance to the Abyss, The Dog in the Rock」

{This is conceptual art intended for a live medium and installation}. 

In an episode from the Greek myth of Sisyphus Tartarus, Albert Camus uses the words "absurd man" and "absurd creation", and says: "There is only one truly philosophical question: suicide. It is about suicide. He used it as a metaphor for the idea that "repeating the same action over and over again can only lead to the same result in the end". Michel Foucault argued that the "human punishment" of our time, the psychological punishment, is more problematic than the physical punishment and torture of modernity. It is not just the legal system, but all groups in modern society are subject to the same structures of surveillance, power and brainwashing. 

If you were plunged into an abyss, would you make an effort to get out of it, even if it deprived you of the ability to think? A wild animal without a high level of civilisation may not be able to use 

the structures and systems we have created. It means that a man cannot pass through the gap of a big rock, only a small animal can. When we imitate what already exists, the masks 

that we may have put on our own faces gradually adhere to our skin, and by the time we feel the itch, we have forgotten that we are even wearing them. If the warmth of the puppy soothes you 

and you want to hold it, pull off the mask and show it to the animal in the flesh, even if it hurts. Otherwise, the animal will be frightened. They live in absurdity.

Discussion from the first event of Hamtama. Due to the coronavirus, it was a recorded event with no audience. As this platform's first project, the event featured individual  performances by core members Hiroshi Murakami and  Meerkat-girl and a collaborative performance by the two were  held. The discussion also included Hidenari  Bannai, another founding member, who talked about why he started Hamtama and his thoughts on the performance.

You are me, I am you, and you can change everything. I believe that expression changes everything. And yet, we continue to live. You are me, I am you, just people who were not chosen by luck and disappeared. To do this, I need to express myself. Say what you want to say. Do what you want to do. Live with that courage.You are me, I am you. I just choose to live desperately. 

I always imagine people's lives as they pass by. Would you die bemoaning your life, or would you struggle to resist and survive? I imagine it all the time.

You are me, I am you. What would you do if you were born into this world as a monster to be discriminated against ? Life will create great karma before you know it. 

Not everyone can be born into the life they wanted to be born into. 

Still, I admire those who continue to live. 

(There are two major streams in history: performance art and performing.In this performance, while including elements of the performing arts, such as computer music performance, costumes, and dance, I sincerely gave meaning to each expression and gave a concept to the whole, aiming to create a new "art'' that synthesizes and integrates. ")
